The short answer

MOQ means Minimum Order Quantity, but the unit is not always a simple number of pieces. A supplier may calculate MOQ by pieces, cartons, color, size, SKU, material batch, production run, or packaging component. Always ask how the quoted MOQ is calculated.

Why manufacturers have MOQ

  • Raw-material MOQ from upstream suppliers.
  • Machine setup, tooling, labor setup, printing, and production efficiency.
  • Packaging minimums and supplier requirements upstream.
  • The economics of changeovers, quality checks, and freight preparation.

Product MOQ versus packaging MOQ

A product may have a 500-piece MOQ while a custom printed box has a 1,000-unit MOQ. The result can be a 1,000-piece practical order, a packaging surcharge, or standard packaging for the first run. Ask for product MOQ, per-color or per-SKU MOQ, and packaging MOQ separately.

Illustrative examples

  • T-shirt: 500 pieces total, with 100 pieces per color.
  • Bottle: 1,000 pieces per color for a custom finish.
  • Custom box: 1,000 packaging units even if the product run is smaller.
  • These are illustrative examples only, not fixed industry standards.

Can MOQ be negotiated?

  1. Use stock materials and standard colors.
  2. Use standard packaging for a trial order.
  3. Accept a higher unit price for a smaller run.
  4. Combine variants where the supplier can run them together.
  5. Reuse existing tooling instead of requesting a new mold.
  6. Ask for a trial order and make any forecast or repeat commitment carefully.

A short MOQ negotiation script

MOQ versus MOV

MOQ is Minimum Order Quantity. MOV is Minimum Order Value. A supplier may accept a low piece count if the order reaches a minimum dollar value, or may require both an item MOQ and an order-value threshold. Confirm which rule applies to your quote.

MOQ traps

  • Headline MOQ differs from customized MOQ.
  • Sample quantity is confused with production MOQ.
  • Per-color, per-SKU, material, and hidden packaging minimums.
  • “Low MOQ” paired with a high setup fee or a different price basis.
