Manufacturer vs Trading Company in China
Understand the difference between China manufacturers, trading companies, and exporters — and what each means for your sourcing.
Definitions
Manufacturer: owns or operates a production facility and ships from its own line.
Trading company: resells products from one or more manufacturers; usually does not own the line.
Exporter: handles export logistics and can be either a manufacturer or a trading company.
How to tell them apart
Public signals include the company's business scope, factory photos, equipment lists, exhibition presence, and the categories they list. Trading companies typically list wide unrelated categories.
Public data alone is rarely enough to be certain. A factory visit or independent audit is the only way to truly verify.
Trade-offs for buyers
Manufacturers usually offer lower pricing and better customization control, but can be less flexible on mixed orders.
Trading companies handle mixed assortments and smaller MOQs well, but margins and lead times are layered.
How FactoryRoster labels them
Each supplier carries a supplier type field: Manufacturer, Trading Company, Exporter, Distributor, Inferred Manufacturer, or Unknown.
Inferred Manufacturer means the public data suggests a manufacturer but we have not confirmed. Buyers should validate before placing orders.
